Winterlicious Special #1
Every year, I get excited over Winterlicious and Summerlicious. These events mean dining at new restaurants and eating different foods I otherwise would never get to try. BLD Restaurant is one I never thought I’d try — merely because I’ve never heard of it before. That being said, while I was looking through the 2012 Winterlicious restaurant list, BLD was definitely not on my radar.
Phil and I, however, were trying to find a fifteen-dollar lunch before class, both that we were willing to try. Evidently, this was our choice.
Like most lunch menus, BLD didn’t have much to offer. At first glance, we already had a clear understanding of which plates we’d be ordering. For appetizers, Phil ordered the Grilled Calamari and I ordered the PEI Mussels. Phil let me have one piece of his calamari. It was tender and the orange accent on the plate really lifted the flavours of the calamari. The PEI mussels had a creamy Romano cheese sauce, and it was nothing less than great together.
For our mains, I ordered the good ol’ fish and chips, or what I thought would be good ol’. The fish was disappointingly dry and fries were not crispy enough to my liking. Phil had a Short Rib Grilled Cheese, which might have been the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had. The short rib was made with a great barbecue rub and the aged cheese was the perfect complement.
Our desserts — pumpkin ice cream with puff pastry and apple tart — were below par. The only part of any of these dishes that I did like was the pumpkin ice cream. Extremely disappointing.
Overall, I’d say our BLD Winterlicious experience was a successful one, judging it on their amazing grilled cheese and the two great appetizers. You can find all three are on their regular menu! I’m definitely coming back!
