What I like about this new cupcake shop, which opened last December, is that it’s just down the street from my school and (sort of) just down another street from my house. Cupcake shops are so rare in Scarborough, so surely this could be Merky’s and my go-to place to fill cupcake cravings when we’re too lazy to bake ourselves.
What I also like about So Into Cupcakes is its simplicity, which you can see in their branding, packaging, website and, of course, in their cupcakes. Their cupcakes aren’t half-cake, half-icing, and overly decorated as we’ve found in other shops. Now, I wouldn’t say they’re works of art with what looks like a dollop of icing and sparingly sprinkled toppings, but they do have an air of elegance.
What I don’t like about this place is their cupcakes. Sorry, let me correct myself: It’s not that I don’t like them, but they’re soooo simple, they’re really nothing special to me. I like that they’re not super sweet like most other are, but they’re not that light as they claim and I was hoping.
At 2.50 a piece (1.50 for a mini), I sadly wasn’t even paying for excellent service (the girl behind the counter was not that friendly and seemed rather impatient — Phil and I were the only customers there) or premium (Callebaut) chocolate garnish in its rationed quantity on a few of their flavours.
This still could be Merky’s and my go-to place to fill cupcake cravings when we’re too lazy to bake ourselves, but we’d also have to be too lazy to go further for better cupcakes. On the surface, this place looks great. Simplicity goes a long way. You could say content matches appearance here, but they need to add a little something so customers (like us) aren’t just biting into another ordinary cupcake.
