Caplansky’s Delicatessen
356 College St

A smoked meat sandwich and mac and cheese here! I split these two orders with Mark cuz I was craving this incredibly meaty sandwich but was also afraid that I would quickly get tired of the single taste.

Please don’t get started on me about how Schwartz’s and only Schwartz’s is the place to have authentic smoked meat. Firstly, I don’t live in Montreal. Secondly, really, what’s authentic these days? I won’t make the comparison to Schwartz’s, cuz I can’t. I’ve never had their infamous smoked meat.

What I can and will tell you is that Caplansky’s — here in Toronto, where we live — serves a fine smoked meat sandwich. Generous enough amount. Salty, spicy, smokey enough. Not dry as I’ve read in other reviews. And good with and without horseradish, my choice of condiment. Oh, and the pickle was juicy. It may not live up to your Schwartz’s standards, but I can see myself craving this again.

The mac and cheese? Decent. A little on the bland side, lacking the sharp cheddar I wanted and their menu claimed it to have. Still, not a letdown. It’s just something I won’t likely order again. (The sandwich might’ve had part in curbing my disappointment.)

Head to this deli for smoked meat and other kosher grub! And watch out for their truck, Thunderin’ Thelma! It’s hard to believe the dragons turned down Zane’s food truck expansion plan, but clearly, he didn’t need ‘em!

About

It's quite simple: this is a blog about food. We are two friends, both named Christine, who love to eat. We spend money we don't have on eating out and invite our broke friends to join us. That's how much we love food.
