How can I explain why we ate at Santouka without making it seem like were trying to jump on the ramen bandwagon? All of Toronto seems to be following a ramen trend! We can’t explain it really. It was freezing out and it just seemed like our only option (that was new to us and nearby) at the time. Before 2012, I only knew of Ajisen Ramen, and all of a sudden there were four ramen houses opening in the second half of 2012!
Unfortunately, it wasn’t that great of a decision. But, I also can’t say it was awful. I am still sitting on the fence.
I understand why ramen is a big deal and why people would love a big bowl of it, especially in winter. It has all the works to make anyone satisfied — you choose your broth, your toppings. If you’re worried about your health, you can even adjust the amount of lard and salt in your ramen! You can even request slightly softer or slightly harder noodles! At least at Santouka, you can. It’s customizable! So, you can enjoy it exactly the way you want. Despite all that, I didn’t love it nor did Tanner. Would I choose pho over ramen? More than likely.
Besides the ramen — Tanner wasn’t a huge fan of her Grilled Salmon on Rice, but the marinade of my Grilled Pork was great and can’t go unnoticed. What I can say is that the handmade Gyoza made the line worth it. The crisp bottom and the filling is one for the books. The spices and the meat complimented each other well, and with every bite there was that crunch I love. It’s close to perfect, I’d say.
Would I come back? Probably. But, it would have to be at someone else’s suggestion, not mine.
